| 01. | What is so special about „true“ 3D maps? | | | The term „true three-dimensional“ sets our lenticular 3D displays apart from customary 3D images. The latter consist in several layers stacked on top of each other according to the proximity or distance of the objects shown in each respective layer. The result: a picture showing close and distant objects one behind the other, like flats in a theatre.
To depict a mountain using this technique, one would have to pile up an infinite amount of layers to get an almost true three-dimensional impression – let alone to get a picture showing the flanks of the mountain exactly matching measuring data.
mbmSystems manufacture maps using phase technology, providing optically true three-dimensional representations which are extremely accurate as for all three dimensions.

| | 02. | Are True-3D displays really flat? | | | True-3D displays made by mbmSystems are 1 mm thick at most. The pictorial content seems three-dimensional because of the picture being coated with a lenticular foil.
Where the eye catches whole mountain ranges in their three-dimensional structure, the hand clutches at thin air. Relief lines are good, but True-3D is “even better”.
